What Is Personal Care?

Personal care involves practical support with everyday activities that may have become difficult because of an injury, disability, health condition or changing care needs. The right support can help individuals remain comfortable, maintain their wellbeing and continue living safely and independently at home.

Personal care is about more than day-to-day assistance. It's about helping people feel comfortable, confident and in control of their lives while receiving support in a way that respects their preferences, routines and individuality.

Whether support is needed as part of a complex care package or to help with everyday activities, our experienced teams provide personalised care tailored to the individual and delivered with dignity and respect.

When Personal Care Can Help

Many people first explore personal care when everyday tasks begin to feel more difficult or take longer than they once did. The right support can help individuals continue living safely and comfortably at home while reducing stress and frustration for both themselves and their families.

Whether support is needed following an injury, because of a disability, during rehabilitation or as needs change over time, personal care can provide practical assistance while helping people maintain their independence and routines.

More Than Personal Care

Many providers offer support with personal care. What makes Active Assistance different is our ability to support individuals whose needs extend beyond routine daily living assistance.

As a provider registered for both Personal Care and the Treatment of Disease, Disorder or Injury (TDDI), we are able to support people with complex health conditions, disabilities, rehabilitation needs and clinical requirements alongside their personal care.

This means support can be delivered as part of a wider, coordinated package that takes account of the individual's health, wellbeing, goals and long-term outcomes, rather than focusing solely on day-to-day tasks.

Conditions We Support

Many of the individuals we support require personal care alongside wider health, rehabilitation or clinical support.

Because personal care is often just one part of the support provided, we take a holistic approach that considers the individual as a whole.

We have extensive experience supporting people living with:

  • Brain Injury Care

Helping individuals rebuild confidence, maintain independence and continue rehabilitation following acquired or traumatic brain injury.

  • Mental Health Support

Supporting people with mental health conditions to live independently, maintain stability, and rebuild confidence in everyday life.

  • Neurological Care

Specialist support for people living with neurological and neurodegenerative conditions, helping them maintain independence, wellbeing and quality of life at home.

  • Physical Disability Support

Specialist support for people with disabilities, that promotes independence, opportunity and quality of life.

  • Spinal Cord Injury Care

Supporting recovery, independence, and quality of life through specialist, clinically-led care.

What We Can Support With

Needing support with personal care can feel like a significant change. For many people, accepting help with tasks they once completed independently can be difficult. That's why we believe personal care should be delivered in a way that promotes dignity, choice and control.

Everyone's needs are different, but typical support may include:

  • Washing and bathing
  • Dressing and grooming
  • Oral hygiene
  • Toileting and continence support
  • Mobility assistance
  • Support with eating and drinking
  • Medication support
  • Morning and evening routines

Our Support Workers take the time to understand individual preferences, routines and priorities, helping people feel comfortable, respected and involved in decisions about their care. The goal is not simply to provide assistance, but to help people maintain confidence, wellbeing and independence in everyday life.

  • Personal Care with Complex Care Expertise

Registered for both Personal Care and Treatment of Disease, Disorder or Injury (TDDI), enabling us to support individuals whose needs extend beyond standard domiciliary care and require a more clinically-led approach.

  • Nurse-Led, Clinical Oversight

Where required, support is backed by nurse-led oversight, competency management and regular reviews to ensure care remains safe and effective.

We understand the importance of continuity and trust. Where possible, we aim to provide consistency within support teams so individuals can build positive relationships with the people providing their care. This is particularly important when delivering personal care, where trust and familiarity help people feel comfortable and confident.

Respect, dignity and choice are fundamental to the way we work. Our Support Workers take time to understand individual preferences and routines, ensuring care is delivered sensitively and respectfully. Care plans are reviewed regularly and can be adapted whenever support requirements change.

Whether an individual requires additional assistance, is working towards greater independence or experiences a change in health, we work closely with them, their family and other professionals to ensure care remains appropriate and effective.

Absolutely. Personal care is often one element of a broader package of support that may also include rehabilitation, community access, medication support, clinical care, education, employment support or assistance with daily living activities.

Every package is built around the individual's overall needs and goals.

Many personal care providers focus primarily on supporting day-to-day activities such as washing, dressing and grooming.

Active Assistance is registered for both Personal Care and Treatment of Disease, Disorder or Injury (TDDI), allowing us to support individuals with more complex health conditions, injuries and rehabilitation needs. This means personal care can be delivered as part of a wider package of support that includes clinical oversight, specialist training, rehabilitation goals and multidisciplinary working where required.

For individuals with complex needs, this provides greater continuity, stronger governance and the reassurance that support can evolve as circumstances change.

Your first conversation with us is simply an opportunity to discuss your circumstances and explore the support available.

We'll take the time to understand your needs, answer your questions and explain the options that may be appropriate. If required, we can then arrange an assessment and develop a personalised package of care.

Funding arrangements vary depending on individual circumstances.

Personal care may be funded privately, through NHS Continuing Healthcare, local authority funding, direct payments, case management arrangements or personal injury and insurance settlements.

Our team can help explain the different options available and guide you through the process.
