Supporting Children and Young People with Complex Needs

Every child and young person deserves the opportunity to live a fulfilling life, develop their independence and achieve their potential. Whether support is needed following an injury, because of a disability or long-term condition, or to help manage complex health needs, our experienced teams provide personalised care tailored to the individual and their family.

Caring for a child or young person with complex needs can be both rewarding and challenging. Families often balance healthcare appointments, education, therapies, routines and day-to-day family life while ensuring their child receives the support they need. Our role is to provide personalised care that supports not only the child or young person, but the whole family.

Every package of care is built around the individual, their aspirations and what is important to them.

We work with children and young people living with a range of complex needs, including:

  • Brain Injury Care

Helping individuals rebuild confidence, maintain independence and continue rehabilitation following acquired or traumatic brain injury.

  • Mental Health Support

Supporting people with mental health conditions to live independently, maintain stability, and rebuild confidence in everyday life.

  • Neurological Care

Specialist support for people living with neurological and neurodegenerative conditions, helping them maintain independence, wellbeing and quality of life at home.

  • Physical Disability Support

Specialist support for people with disabilities, that promotes independence, opportunity and quality of life.

  • Spinal Cord Injury Care

Supporting recovery, independence, and quality of life through specialist, clinically-led care.

Helping Children and Young People Thrive

Support should be about more than meeting care needs.

Children and young people should have opportunities to learn, build relationships, pursue interests and participate in activities that are important to them.

Our support can help individuals:

  • Develop confidence and independence
  • Participate in education and learning
  • Access hobbies and interests
  • Build social connections
  • Engage with their local community
  • Achieve personal goals and milestones

We focus on helping children and young people experience as much independence, opportunity and choice as possible.

Supporting Family Life

When a child has complex needs, the impact is often felt across the whole family. Siblings, parents, and carers may all be adjusting to changing routines and responsibilities, while trying to maintain a positive family life.

Our teams work closely with families to create support that fits around existing routines and priorities, helping reduce pressure while ensuring children receive the care and support they need.

For many families, the right support creates more opportunities to spend quality time together and focus on the things that matter most.

Our Approach to Children's Care

  • Family-Centred Support

Families know their child best. We work in partnership with parents, carers and wider support networks to ensure care is personalised, consistent and aligned with family priorities.

  • Promoting Independence

From early childhood through to young adulthood, our goal is to help individuals develop skills, confidence and independence wherever possible.

  • Multidisciplinary Working

We work alongside therapists, clinicians, schools, case managers and wider healthcare professionals to ensure care is coordinated and aligned with broader goals.

  • Support That Evolves over Time

Children grow, develop and change. Support should too. Regular reviews help ensure care remains appropriate and responsive as needs, aspirations, and circumstances evolve.

Supporting Education and Everyday Life

Education often plays a key role in a child or young person's development and future opportunities.

Our support can help individuals access education and everyday experiences by helping with:

  • School, college or university attendance
  • Therapy programmes
  • Daily routines
  • Community participation
  • Social activities
  • Health and wellbeing needs

The aim is to help children and young people engage fully with the opportunities available to them.

Preparing for Adulthood

Transitioning into adulthood can be an exciting but challenging time for young people and their families.

As needs change, support may need to evolve too. We help families plan for a future that reflects their goals, abilities and ambition. Our goal is to help young people to develop independence, access new opportunities and prepare for adult life.

Working with Families and Professionals

We work closely with families, case managers, schools, therapists, healthcare professionals and commissioners to create coordinated packages of support.

Through clear communication and collaborative planning, we help ensure children and young people receive the right support at the right time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Many of the children and young people we support have complex clinical needs alongside their condition or disability. This may include respiratory support, PEG feeding, medication management, mobility support, or other specialist requirements.

Care is tailored to the individual and delivered in partnership with families and wider professionals to ensure support stays safe, consistent and aligned with their goals and healthcare needs.

Yes. Many of the children and young people we support have more than one condition or a combination of physical, neurological, behavioural, and clinical needs.

Rather than focusing on a diagnosis alone, we take a comprehensive approach that considers the whole child, their family, and the support needed to help them thrive.

Building the right support team is incredibly important, particularly when caring for children and young people with complex needs.

The Care Manager responsible for the package plays a central role in the recruitment process and will lead interviews for potential Support Workers. By taking the time to understand the child's needs, personality, routines and interests, they can identify candidates who are the right fit for both the individual and their family.

Before any job offer is made, we arrange meet-and-greet sessions to give the child or young person and their family the opportunity to get to know potential Support Workers and help ensure everyone feels comfortable and confident moving forward.

Yes. For many families, access to reliable respite care is an important part of supporting wellbeing and family life.

Depending on individual circumstances, care packages can be designed to provide families with added support, while ensuring children and young people continue receiving high-quality, consistent care.

Growing up often brings new opportunities, challenges and support needs. As children and young people move towards adulthood, we work closely with them, their families and wider professionals to ensure support evolves alongside their goals and aspirations.

One of the benefits of our model is continuity. Wherever possible, the same team of Support Workers can continue supporting a young person as they transition into adult services within Active Assistance. This helps maintain trusted relationships, reduces disruption and provides reassurance during what can often be a significant period of change.

Our focus is on making the transition as smooth as possible, while supporting increasing independence and ensuring care remains tailored to the individual's needs as they move into adulthood.

Families are central to successful support. We take time to understand family routines, priorities and goals, working collaboratively with parents and carers to ensure care is consistent and reflects what matters most to the child and their family.

Yes. We work alongside schools, colleges, therapists, clinicians, case managers and wider professional teams to ensure support remains coordinated and aligned with shared goals. This multidisciplinary approach helps create consistency and supports positive outcomes.

Yes. Our services are regulated by the relevant care regulators, including the Care Quality Commission (CQC) in England and the Care Inspectorate Wales (CIW) in Wales.

This provides reassurance that care is delivered within robust clinical, governance and safeguarding frameworks, and is regularly assessed against recognised standards for quality, safety and effectiveness.

Active Assistance is registered for both Personal Care and the Treatment of Disease, Disorder or Injury, reflecting our ability to support individuals with complex health needs as well as day-to-day care requirements.

Your first conversation doesn't need to be a commitment to care.

We will take time to understand your situation, answer any initial questions, and discuss the support you may need. From there, we can arrange an assessment and recommend a care plan tailored to the individual.

Funding arrangements vary depending on individual circumstances.

Care for children and young people may be funded privately, through NHS Continuing Healthcare, local authority funding, direct payments, case management arrangements or personal injury and insurance settlements.

Our team can help explain the different options available and guide you through the process.
