Active Assistance client Patty is pictured with a group of four people, including her care team and family. She is on a balcony in Australia. She is in her wheelchair, wearing a cream fleece, grey trousers, grey scarf, hat and sunglasses.
“The care I receive allows me to do anything I want to do and go wherever I like, when I like.”

When Patty suffered a stroke at the age of 50, her life changed dramatically.

The stroke left her with both physical and cognitive challenges and affected her mobility, confidence and independence. Like many people adapting to life after a life-changing event, Patty faced the challenge of rebuilding her routine while continuing to do the things she loved.

Since 2017, Active Assistance has been supporting Patty to live independently at home, providing assistance with personal care, meal preparation, household tasks, transport and day-to-day activities.

Rebuilding Confidence and Independence

Before receiving support, Patty rarely left the house. Today, her life looks very different.

With the support of her care team, she regularly attends painting classes, sings in her local choir, visits theatres and art galleries, and remains actively involved in her local community. She has also channelled her experiences into advocacy work, becoming a writer and campaigner focused on tackling violence.

Reflecting on the difference support has made, Patty says:

“Having the support workers from Active Assistance has given me so much more confidence and independence. I used to avoid travelling into London by train, but now I'm a pro at it because they are always there to help.”

Her support team has helped make new experiences feel accessible and achievable.

“Because they are all capable drivers, they're happy to take me on day trips to places like Bath and Silverstone. Their assistance has really enabled me to live life to the fullest despite my mobility challenges. I'm so grateful for their care.”

Adventures Without Limits

One of Patty's greatest passions is travel.

Recently, she embarked on a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Australia to visit her sister and extended family, travelling with two Support Workers from Active Assistance.

The journey included a stop in Singapore before continuing to Australia, where her sister had arranged fully accessible accommodation overlooking the ocean.

“We did so many wonderful things. We visited the Sydney Opera House twice to see a ballet and a Verdi opera, went to the Blue Mountains, cruised Sydney Harbour and the Hawkesbury River, visited art galleries and explored the coastline.”

Patty also enjoyed using a beach wheelchair to access the coast and visited a wildlife sanctuary where she got up close to native animals.

“The support workers ensured I could fully experience and enjoy everything. It was an absolutely magical trip that I'll never forget.”

Living Life on Her Terms

Patty's growing confidence extends far beyond travel. She continues to embrace new opportunities, including taking part in the challenging Wheeling for December 5K event, while maintaining an active social and cultural life.

Along the way, she has built strong relationships with her support team.

“I have a good relationship with the support workers. They are all very friendly. I've even taken some of them to the theatre and exhibitions with me over the years.”

Looking back, Patty is clear about the impact support has had on her life.

“The care I receive allows me to do anything I want to do and go wherever I like when I like. I have a great team!”

Today, Patty continues to travel, pursue her interests, spend time with loved ones and advocate for causes she cares about. Her story shows how care is about more than practical support; it's about building confidence, creating opportunities and enabling people to continue living life on their own terms.
