At Active Assistance, we love celebrating the achievements of the people we support, and Hugh's journey is a fantastic example of how the right support can help someone build confidence and greater independence.
Hugh lives with a learning disability and Type 1 diabetes, meaning he requires insulin and careful management of his medication every day. With the support of his dedicated nursing team, he has made significant progress in developing his independence and taking a more active role in managing his own health.
While Hugh still relies on nurses to calculate the complex medication he requires with each meal, he has recently reached an important milestone. With support and encouragement from his team, he is now able to administer his evening medication independently, a huge achievement that reflects how far he has come.
The benefits of this increased confidence extend well beyond managing his health. Hugh's mum has seen a remarkable difference in his independence and willingness to embrace new experiences.
"Hugh's favourite thing about Active Assistance's support is going out on adventures, and the help they provide has helped him to gain confidence in going out and about and speaking to people."
Today, Hugh enjoys an active and fulfilling life within his local community. He goes out every day, visits the cinema and local coffee shops, enjoys dog walking and regularly socialises with others at his local day centre.
For Hugh and his family, support is about much more than meeting day-to-day needs. It's about creating opportunities, building confidence and helping him live life on his own terms.
