For Charlotte and her family, support from Active Assistance means more than managing complex medical needs. It provides reassurance, stability and the opportunity to focus on being a family.

Born prematurely, Charlotte experienced a challenging start to life and spent time in neonatal intensive care following breathing difficulties. As she grew older, she required ongoing support to manage a range of complex medical conditions, including severe reflux, hydrocephalus, sleep apnoea and alternating hemiplegia of childhood.

Charlotte's care needs are extensive. She requires support with feeding via a PEG and nasogastric tube, monitoring of her sleep apnoea, mobility, personal care and day-to-day activities.

Before receiving support from Active Assistance, Charlotte's mother provided round-the-clock care. Her medical needs often required constant attention, leaving little opportunity for rest or respite and placing significant pressure on the whole family.

Creating Stability at Home

Active Assistance began supporting Charlotte when she was just 18 months old and has been part of her journey for the past five years.

One of the biggest improvements has been around Charlotte's feeding routine and overnight care. Previously, feeding schedules were extremely demanding, with feeds taking place multiple times throughout the day and night.

Working alongside the family, our team helped establish a more manageable routine, allowing feeds to be provided overnight and reducing disruption during the day.

As a result, Charlotte is now able to sleep through the night, something that was incredibly difficult in the past due to her complex medical needs.

For her family, this has brought peace of mind and a significant improvement in quality of life, knowing that Charlotte's health needs are being monitored and managed safely.

Building Confidence and Independence

While managing Charlotte's clinical needs remains a key part of her support, our focus is also on helping her develop confidence and independence.

Our team supports Charlotte with her daily life, encouraging her to build skills, make choices and become more involved in tasks wherever possible.

Over time, this has helped her become more confident and enabled her to develop greater independence. Just as importantly, Charlotte has built strong relationships with her support team and enjoys the companionship, consistency and encouragement they provide.

Supporting the Whole Family

For Charlotte's family, the goal has always been to create as much normality, stability and happiness as possible while managing complex health needs.

By providing consistent, reliable support, Active Assistance helps reduce the pressures of day-to-day caregiving and gives the family confidence that Charlotte's medical, practical and emotional needs are being met.

As Charlotte continues to grow, our team will continue working alongside her family to support her independence, manage her complex health needs and help her achieve the best possible quality of life.
